ABOUT THE COACH
Michele Smith is one of the greatest pitchers in fastpitch softball history. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA (1996 & 2000). In the 2000 Olympics she threw a 14 inning 2-hitter against China en route to compiling a 0.00 ERA with 37 K's in 27.2 innings pitched. She was 2-0 with 23 K's in 14 innings pitched at the '96 Games in Atlanta.
Michele has dominated the Japan Pro League since 1993, when she became the first foreign player to be pictured on the cover of Japan Softball Magazine. She has led her team - Toyota Shokki - to six Japan League Championships while being named League MVP six times, most recently in 2004. She was named the Japan League's Best Pitcher for five straight seasons with ERA's of 0.08 (1999), 0.00 (2000), 0.26 (2001), 0.07 (2002), and 0.22 (2003).
Michele's path to pitching stardom wasn't easy. In 1986 an automobile accident chopped off part of her elbow bone and tore the triceps from her left arm. Despite suffering what appeared to be a career ending injury, after 9 months of intense rehab Michele returned to pitch for Oklahoma State University, where she became a two-time NCAA All-American and still holds the school's record for wins (82).
