About Coach Mike Candrea
A lot of coaches know the game. Coach Candrea has the uncanny ability to teach and translate so that you really understand it. Utilizing a straight-forward and conversational style, he displays an even temperament that gives the viewer, whether a coach or player, the feeling that they can really "get it"!
The viewer clearly sees what to do and what not to do...AND WHY!
Mike Candrea led Team USA to the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens by outscoring opponents by a combined score of 51-1. With his Olympic duties completed, Candrea returned to the University of Arizona, where he has compiled a 1316-297-2 (.815) record (.835 winning percentage) over 24 years. He is one of just five Division I softball coaches to win 1,000 games and his Arizona Wildcats have won seven NCAA Championships, including the 2006 & 2007 title. His 2008 team was eliminated in game 8 of the College World Series.
Coach Candrea took a partial nine-month leave of absence to serve the U.S. Women's National Team in the same position in preparation for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games.
For all of his success, Candrea has been named Pac-10 Coach or co-Coach of the Year nine times. He has won three National Coach of the Year awards and was elected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996.
